Shazam notches up 50 million users

Shazam reaches the 50 million users mark

Mobile music service Shazam – one of the most genuinely useful and impressive apps out there – said Wednesday it has notched up its 50 millionth user.

They might not all be regulars, but the company claims that it has increased its user base by 15 million since February this year, with the offering now live in 150 countries.

The company has developed an application and algorithm that identifies a song or music track by ‘listening’ to it. The app has really picked up steam since launching on the iPhone 3G in the summer of 2008 and has been downloaded more than ten million times from the iPhone App Store.

It is also available via BlackBerry App World, Nokia’s Ovi Store and Google’s Android Market.

The company has attracted attention from investors and this week announced investment from Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, which joins existing investors Acacia Capital and DN Capital.
