Ofcom appoints UK Broadband CTO as director of spectrum

Philip Marnick has been appointed Ofcom's group director in charge of spectrum

UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced the appointment of Philip Marnick as its group director in charge of spectrum. Marnick currently holds the position of  CTO at wireless service provider UK Broadband and will move to Ofcom in November. He has 27 years experience in the wireless communications industry, having previously held senior roles at O2, BT, Orange, Softbank Mobile and Nuance.

He will join Ofcom to lead the regulator’s Spectrum Policy Group. The group is responsible for setting and implementing the strategy for managing spectrum, which involves clearing, awarding and licensing it.

In an interview with telecoms.com in April this year Marnick, in his role at UK Broadband speaking ahead of the annual TD-LTE Summit, noted that the TD-LTE is developing quite rapidly.

“Over the last year we have seen an increasing level of interest in 3.5/3.6 TD-LTE. More needs to be done – we believe that through industry collaboration much will be achieved. We need to move away from the technology “wars” that dominated the early days of the mobile market.”

The Broadband World Forum is taking place on the 22nd – 24th October 2013 at the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre, Amsterdam. Click here to download a brochure for the event and here to register for a conference pass.
