Broadcom scores against Qualcomm

In on of the many ongoing patent dispute sagas between mobile vendors, Broadcom appeared to get one up on Qualcomm on Thursday, when a federal district court found that Qualcomm failed to disclose patents to an industry standards body.

As a result, the court ruled that the vendor waived its rights to enforce two patents covered in the H.264 video compression standard.

This lets Broadcom off the hook over Qualcomm’s allegations that the former infringed two of its patents.

“We are pleased that the court agreed with the jury’s recommendation on standards abuse and believe the evidence that came to light in this case is illustrative of Qualcomm’s ongoing abuse of the rules of industry standards bodies,” said David Dull, Broadcom’s senior vice president and general counsel.
