Google phone is real – reports

A Google executive in Spain has reportedly confirmed that the internet search company is indeed working on a Google Phone, adding credibility to recent rumours of the device.

According to Spanish news site Notacias.com, Isabel Aguilera, Google’s MD for Portugal and Spain, said the company had “dedicated” engineers who were working on the project. The engineering team is working on the phone as well as other “non-core” projects, she said.

At the same time US telecoms giant AT&T, said at the CTIA wireless conference in Florida that it has received over one million requests for Apple’s recently announced iPhone.

The company said the requests had come in via its website following an advert by Apple which featured the AT&T logo, replacing the recently acquired Cingular business.

Randall Stephenson, COO of AT&T said “over one million people have asked us to call when this phone is available”.

Google’s rumoured device was last week shot down as a hardware development when Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, said the search firm was building mobile specific software, not a handset. Munster believes Google is working on applications that work on mobile devices like Apple’s iPhone, rather than its own handset.

Neither Apple nor Google will comment on speculation.
