Ofcom puts 700MHz on the table for mobile broadband

Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, has proposed that 700MHz spectrum could be refarmed from digital TV and used for mobile broadband instead, in order to cope with the expected demand for data. However, in its view, this is unlikely to happen until 2018, due to the need to establish European wide agreement.

IP&TV 2012 round-up

As always Informa’s analyst team was out in force at this year’s IP&TV World Forum – the last IP&TV World Forum, it turns out, as the show re-brands to TV Connect for 2013 and beyond. This year’s show was certainly bigger and brasher than previous years (exhibit a: the Red Bull F1 car on the upper floor) and most of the conversations we had showed companies in bullish mood about future opportunities.

UK super-fast altnets starting to find their niche

A report from Point Topic finds that smaller network operators are beginning to find a niche for high-speed broadband services in the UK, despite BT and Virgin Media gaining real scale with their own market-dominating services.

Sky Anytime+ service now available across UK networks

UK broadband networks have another large scale streaming service to contend with after Sky flicked the switch on making its Anytime+ service available to all of its customers who subscribe to an HD package, regardless of their ISP. Sky estimates that this will bring the Anytime+ service into an additional five million homes.

Huawei blocked from Australian NBN bid

Chinese infrastructure vendor Huawei was told not to bid for any contracts relating to the Australian National Broadband Network (NBN) project, it has emerged. Local news agencies have reported that Huawei learned before Christmas last year that any efforts it made to win NBN contracts would be unsuccessful. The reports suggest that government concerns over security lie at the heart of the decision.

Indian broadband connections hit 13 million

India now has over 13 million broadband connections, according to a report in the Times of India. The Indian minister of communication and IT, Sachin Pilot said that the country now has 13.35 million connections, with the largest number of these in the state of Maharashtra.

Ali Tabassi, chief operating officer for YTL Communications, which operates a mobile broadband in Malaysia under the brand name of Yes, believes his company’s service offerings stand up to the brand promise. While in many developed markets mobile broadband coverage often suffers from poor coverage and lacklustre speeds, in Malaysia, Yes will let you stream YouTube videos or conduct video calls whether you’re in downtown Kuala Lumpar or in the mountains near the border of Thailand.
